Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons.

In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course.

While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.

A Little More About Fresca’s Mexican Grill

Conveniently located at the Citadel Outlets’ Food Court by Starbucks Coffee.

Fresca’s was founded in 1991 when Tom Ryder opened the first Fresca’s Mexican Grill in Costa Mesa, California. While relatively small (1,200 sq. ft.) and off the main thoroughfare, the restaurant quickly grew a cult following. It became obvious that food quality and value were most important in developing fiercely loyal customers, critical in the competitive restaurant industry.

We provide better quality and more flavorful food than most fast food restaurant while providing quicker service and lower prices than full-service restaurants. As a result, we have developed intensely loyal followings at our restaurants. Our restaurants reflect an authentic, yet fresh ambiance. They are designed with a contemporary Mexican hamlet feel, self-service fresh salsa bars and exhibition-style cooking which provides a pleasant backdrop to the ordering process. After orders are taken to the counter, food is prepared fresh for each customer and then delivered to the table or picked up at the counter by the customer.

Our approach to food quality and preparation is the single most important aspect of our concept. We purchase only the finest ingredients and meticulously train our cooks to prepare fresh, consistent and well-portioned meals. We offer generous portions for traditional Mexican food items, including tacos, burritos and quesadillas as well as more unusual items such as our Cancun Roll and shrimp tacos. We prepare food in open view of the customers so they are able to see the quality and freshness. Because the health of our customers is important to us, we use no preservatives or animal fat. In addition, all meats are lean, high-quality, hand-trimmed and charbroiled to ensure the healthiest possible product. Our customers notice the difference and this is a significant advantage for us.

Our full menu is conveniently offered from lunch through dinner and may be ordered as dine-in or take-out. Our operating premise is to serve a very high volume of orders per day and we have accomplished that in each of our restaurants. To encourage speed, we provide customers with a clear view of the menu while they are in line so they are ready to order immediately upon reaching the front. As the regional groundwater management agency for two of the most utilized groundwater basins in the state of California , the WRD plays an integral role in overall water resource management in southern Los Angeles County . As the population of the region continues to increase, it becomes even more important to maximize the use of both imported and local water sources available to the WRD.

The WRD manages groundwater for nearly four million residents in 43 cities of southern Los Angeles County . The 420 square mile service area uses about 250,000 acre-feet of groundwater per year, which equates to nearly 40% of the total demand for water. The WRD ensures that a reliable supply of high quality groundwater is available through its clean water projects, water supply programs, and effective management principles.

Penny Lane Centers is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization founded in 1969 to serve a handful of abused teenage girls. Since that time, Penny Lane programs and services have expanded to serve thousands of children, youth, and families each year.

Services include residential treatment, foster care, adoption services, an on-site special education school, outpatient mental health services and transitional housing for Emancipated foster youth.

A Little More About Montebello Teachers Association

The Montebello Teachers Association is the exclusive representative of non-administrative certificated employees in the District. Membership services include contract administration, grievance processing, association programs, legal and professional consultation, economic services and Workers Compensation job injury consultation.

Lifetime health benefits is also a benefit of membership. The MTA Trust Fund pays for retirees’ medical benefit when the District discontinues coverage.

The Montebello Teachers Association is an affiliate of the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association. We are the exclusive representatives of the non-management certificated employees of the Montebello Unified School District. Our members work with over 35,000 students in Bell Gardens, City of Commerce and Montebello, as well as portions of East Los Angeles, Monterey Park, Pico Rivera and South San Gabriel, participating in grades K-12.
